Dehydrated Skin
Dehydrated Skin a temporary condition
Symptoms
Dull skin
Tightness, discomfort
Could be seen in all skin types
Dehydrated skin lacks water
- Skin’s dermis layer is a water reservoir providing hydration to the upper layers of the skin.
- Good hydration depends on the capacity of the upper layers to hold and retain water.
- Due to environmental factors and weather conditions, the evaporation of water accelerates. The skin is not able to retain water
effectively. It lacks water.Skin gets dull and dehydrated.

-
Hydration is a primary requirment of our skin. Dehydrated skin is more vulnerable,
less elastic and is more susceptible to the formation of wrinkles. When skin is
dehydrated, its barrier function is weakened and more vulnerable to external aggressions.
Hydrating you skin can also help to reinforce it helping to protect it external influences.
Dehydrated skin, contrary to what people may think, dies not lack water but lacks the capability to retain water. This negatively impacts the process
of cellular renewal which can leave skin feeling dry and dehydrated

Dry Skin a permanent state
Symptoms
Rough, coarse skin
Dry patches
Tightness
Flaky skin
Prone to redness and itching
Dry skin lacks essential oils called lipids
Lipids are released in the top most layer of the skin and have two functions:
- They are an essential part of the skin’s protection barrier.
- Acts as cement between the cells to ensure flexibility and comfort of the skin.
When lipids get depleted the cells flake and skin pulls, gets rough.
Did you know?
Dry skin is often defined as having small wrinkles and can be tight, rough and dull.
There are many factors that give rise to dry skin. Main contributing factors are
genetics and the environment:
External Factors:
There are a number of external factors that can cause dry skin:
exposure to the sun
extreme climatic conditions (wind, cold and heat)
aggressive chemical agents (detergents and solvents)
therapeutic treatment (retinoid or tar)
Genetic Factors:
Genetic pre- disposition influences skin dryness and occurs in the period in which
sebaceous glands are no longer very active (infancy and old age) or where they are
not present (legs, forearms and hands)

Dry Skin - Body and Lips
Body - Symptoms Body skin that is dry, rough, sometimes cracks, lacks softness and suppleness. Glucides
are the main source of energy for cells. When lacking in glucides, skin does not
regenerate well and production of lipids are reduced. Skin becomes dry, Intracellular
cement reduces and skin loses its elasticity It becomes uncomfortable, it flakes,
thickens, and fissures (cuts) can appear in areas most under duress (elbows, knees)
Lips - Symptoms
Weakened, dried, out, cracked, dull looking lips.
Like the under eye area, lips are very sensitive. They have very weak, non-existent
protective barrier. Also there are no sebaceous glands to secrete oil as a part
of the protective barrier. Hence this area loses water easily making it dry and
dull. The lips tend to get rough and chapped.
